what are mkll gti's like without pas

Recently bought a 1985 8v minus PAS. Thought the steering was disappointingly heavy - until I changed the grotty front tyres. Sorted! Wouldn't want PAS now and my missus reckons its OK as it is too.

No PAS, much better. Can feel the car more when cornering and going at speed

I've had 3 mark 2's, 2 without PAS and one without.

I would have changed the front tyres, but i built up some arm muscles hefting the steering around

Possibly a stupid question: Could one of these 16v/g60 quick racks be used without all of the power steering gubbins plumbed in? ie Just to have a quicker rack on a non pas car.

bit of  hijacking but:

i have an 8v gti with PAS 90 spec and it basically needs a new rack and piping, but in the very near future im getting a G60 lump.. im going to assume i can use the 8v gti PAS steering with the g60 engine without any problems, but we all know what assumption does.

only reason i ask is im about to buy an 8v rack and pipes, dont want to have to change the rack again in a few months when im changing the engine lol!
