2 cv boots in 2 weeks and gearbox choice!
« on: 10 August 2007, 09:18 »
Hello again troops,

Just found my outer N/S cv boot has gone again. Went about 2 weeks ago just after i had some new tyres, lowered the car more and has four whel alingment done. I blamed the garage at the time but perhaps it's been caused by something else???? The car is pretty low, about 70-75mm on supersport with G60 arches (wishbones point up). Both times it has been a small tear in the boot. Prob gonna just put new joints and boots on both sides. The car has a fair amount of tourqe so i guess its worth doing?!      Does anyone have any ideas why this keeps happening?     Think its also time for a new box as my diff is gettin very noisy, can anyone recommend a box i can use?  Ideally i want something a bit sronger (to cope with a higher outpt) and a longer fifth. At the moment motorway crusing is a bit noisy as it comes on cam just before 4k (75-80mph). Car has a mk3 2.0 bottom end.

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help, this forum's saved me so much hassle and money over the years! Keep up the good work

if it has the b/e off a mk3 then the mk3 gearbox should be ok, you'll need the mk3 flywheel if i remember correctly, but whether the driveshafts will be suitable then im not 100%.

as for the cv boots, its probbaly becuse ur car is propperly on its arse. try new joints.

noble tuned - and still not fast enough!

Are you using genuine VAG cv boots???
I had a garage fit a new one last year, it had a small tear in it before I even got home.
We assumed thay had caught it with a spanner so they replaced it free of charge and were very careful not to trap it again, by the time I got home it had a small tear in it!!!
It turned out they were using cheap boots that were too thin and they were expanding under centrifugal force and just catching on the bottom ball joint bolts!!! Got them to fit a VAG part on the third attempt and it's still fine a year later.

If you are using VAG parts perhaps the bolts holding your bottom ball joints on are slightly too long.

You got any pics of your dad's split ?

the one i replaced wasnt gen, so i've ordered a gen one along with some new bolts and hub nut! Going to lift the front up anyway as its catching on everything in site! Think its time to start looking for a box to rebuild. Does anyone know if there would be any point fitting a diesel box? I'm thinking stronger and longer fifth????   Cheeers again

While we are on the subject of boxes, do 8v boxes fit directly onto 16v blocks? My valver box is a little noisy.

Cheers,
Andy

8v box will fit but you'll need to fit an 8v GTI friction disc :)
As for the CV boot tears, try swapping the ball joint bolts & lock plate over so that the bolt heads are on top of the wishbone and the plate is at the bottom :)
