slippery slope mate... is that really the car you want to spend the next few years, and a ton of cash on?

someone with sense. that's why i didn't get a engine conversion in my mk2.

I know what you are saying toph, really not sure what i want to do with it, i quite like it but its just very slow. its done quite alot of miles (140k+) so it wont be worth much to sell so i was thinking maybe a 1.8t conv for that extra power. do it gradually.

but then again i do want a Rallye quite badly  :undecided:

Mate, i know a few people who are spending up to 15k on there MK2's doing all kinds of crazy stuff..... they are spending loads a cash (15k) on them and getting figures close to 150bhp out of a mk1 1.8t..... and yep im very jealous..... BUT!!! these are not there daily drives, they are weekend cars and thats it.... they have other cars such as mk4 gti or a mk5 gti to run around in

Im VERY jealous of them as id love to tune up a car and have a little pocket rocket, but the fact of the matter is i havent got the time, expertise, and most importantly the cash to do it.

You can read Golf and PVW anytime and see people the same as the above who have the dough to do it but then there are those who have only that car as the daily drive and you read the sacrifices they have made the lifts they have to scrounge and the stress they go through to do what you are asking..... My advice would be if you want a turbo.... buy a mk4 Turbo for about 5k and get it re-mapped... in the long run you have brought a tried and tested Turbo'd car done by VW that will be newer ready to go and will end up probably costing you alot less..... than putting a 1.8t in your mk3....!

Or buy a mk3 VR6 for 3.5k that will give you the extra power and most of your mods will swap straight over!!!

anyways that just my 2p's worth

Yeah this is a difficult one.

I can see how it's easy to get sucked into doing a full on engine conversion without fully knowing all of the expense and potential problems with it.

Made all the more difficult if the car you're thinking about doing is you daily!

All i'd say is find out all the facts and do your research before deciding bud.

I have spent roughly 4k on mine since i have owned my mk2
bought the car for 750quid in 2004 i think

1.8 8v gti head was replaced twice
2.8 vr6 conversion (bottom end went)
2.9 vr6 gettin put in at the moment
full respray
5 stud conversion
new suspension
poly bushes all around
alloys
ss exhaust
new interior

I dont really think engine conversions are that expensive
i did some of my vr6 swap then gave up

www.oldskoolperformance.co.uk did most of the work for me as i aint clued up on other parts of engine conversion
