What's this then?
« on: 25 July 2007, 16:23 »
I'm in the middle of changing all my dash lights over to red and brought a flashing red led as theres one on my dash already that I've never seen work. Thought it was an easy swap but when I pulled the blank out and followed the wires down they led to this little black box. It says 998 VAG 040.

I presumded the old led was something to do with an alarm but it didn't work and I've never heard or managed to set any alarm off. But I dont want to tempt fate, start fiddaling around n set something off that I really shouldn't! So I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what this is, if it is safe to just replace the led or how can I make the whole thing work?

Oh and while I was taking the dash out under the steering wheel I found an immobiliser switch...is this standard or has someone put it in? (wiring doesn't look too pro)

I have the same thing in my car and didn't know what it was so thought it was best to leave alone, think it is an alarm box but not to sure

I have one of them as well, think it is for alarm.  I have a sounder in the engine bay fastened beneath the expansion tank.  If you do take it out let me know how it goes cos I would like to bin mine as well.

I have this too on my 90 spec 8v... thought it was the previous owner's attempt!

I don't think a semi will give the same results

I don;t have one of those, I feel left out now

But I did finally fit and get running my Load Leveller lights - why, I don't know.. They're not going to be of any real use to me but still
