Premiun unleaded definitely makes a difference of about 4 mpg at the frugal end. Old mk2 8v had similar characteristics. Not worked out yet whether the increased cost of the premium fuel is worth it.

Of course, bu*ger all point in having a GTI if you are going to drive it like an OAP, so I too give the injectors a good blast now and then. Mind, some of you boys must drive like Lewis Hamilton - just don't go out in the wet.....

The highest I have ever got my average mpg to is 40 and that was for a split second and that involved spending half the journey rolling in N.
If you're decelerating, it's more efficient to leave it in gear than leave it in neutral...  reason being in neutral a small amount of fuel is still required to keep the engine ticking over, but if all the engine is doing is effectively being a big brake then the engine management system is clever enough to know there's no point putting any fuel into the engine, since the motion of the car is enough to keep the engine turning.  especially if you're braking because any fuel going in would actually act to slightly hinder your attempt at slowing down I suppose.

My own playing around seems to confirm this too, although I've not really properly tested it out.

I do tend to drive around like a bit of a grandma a lot of the time... comes with having a pregnant fianceé in the passenger seat I guess .

I'm a chicken in the wet though... had a few hairy sideways moments  so I tend to err on the side of caution now.  :undecided:

^^ Haha oh yes, I had one or two scarey moments in my old nissan 200sx - that car was so much fun in the dry, but as soon as the road got slightly damp it was a liability!

I do miss her, but she definatly taught me to be more careful in the rain!!

I swear it's only all those hours wasted playing colin Mccrae and the like that stopped me wrapping it around a tree last time - a country lane I thought I knew suddenly had a vicious left-hander!.   in fact my missus' dad wrote his car off on that lane only a week or two later (when he was following me :embarassed:) but that was because some tw@ had left 5 bags of cement just around a blind corner .  I managed to avoid them, he managed to lose the rear on a combination of mud and cement dust, and went into a ditch/tree on the inside of the corner.... not a very nice thing to see in your rear-view mirror.

the VR seems to nicely squeal/understeer a bit when you push too far in the dry, and you can just ease off and all is well again, but in the wet it seems to just let go at the rear without much warning.

Nissan 200 .. a well behaved RWD car compared to my old 2.0 litre Capri... The merest sniff of a corner in the wet and I would be sailing towards the uncharted waters of the ditch...damn fine car otherwise.. German built too
