LED Side Lights On GTi?
« on: 22 July 2007, 11:37 »
Just picked up some LED side lights for the GTi and they come on briefly only to go off again?  I had them on my Z4 and TT previous to that, with no real problems, however on the BMW the warming light came on due to lack of resistance offered - hence the car thought a bulb had popped.

Has anyone else mod'd the lights?  The standard sides are usless and 6 LEDs are so much better - in fact in the summer you only need the head lights in bad weather or very late at night.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Glynn   :undecided:

I was going to post the link to my thread over there, but you already have

The value of resistors I used 'should' work on the sidelight circuit as well, but I have not tried them yet myself. Mainly because I dont have zenons so dont have a burning need for white LEDs.

glynnd, I thought your TSN thread was about interior footwell lights. Aren't you referring to LED exterior sidelights here? (like the latest Audi and BMW 'daytime driving lights').

The OP at TSN was dogbucket regarding footwell lights. Glynnd was asking about side lights. However dogbucket's resistor solution could work for glynnd.  Do keep up :nerd:

....If I'm to keep up I obviously need some more mods on my car!. Twas a case of being in too much of a hurry and not reading the thread properly.

It would be great if someone could produce a solution. Hella produce a LED 'driving light' which fits the foglight hole for the Mk5 Golf but not for the Mk5 GTI . Passat style rear lights would be good too.

The resistor solution will work, but unlike my footwell mod would require a resistor on both sides.

The only issue as I mentioned in my TSN thread is that the resistor packs sold by car LED suppliers are simulating something like a 20W load and will get very very hot. The value of resistor I chose is just enough to fool the circuit and just gets a bit warm.

iirc somebody is making an LED rear light cluster for the mk5, was discussed on uk-mkvs. But I dont know how it defeats the bulb detection

May seem like a daft question, but could using vag-com defeat the bulb detection?

quite possibly

my experiments generated some fault codes logged in the central electrics module so it knows what is going on. As newer models (like golf plus?) have LED lights now the module must be recoded to remove the bulb detection.

I dont know how this could be done though, I only do electronics not software

Thanks for the all the responses / advice fellas - but this sounds very technical to a novice like me?!

DogBucket - am I to wire the resistors into the loom/circuit?  (told you I was a novice!)

Read the thread from the link and sounds like a plan - now it's just putting it into practice  :undecided:  Anyone near Wilmslow?!

Looks like a diagramme is required - story of my life if you listen to the mrs!

More help please.  Thanks again for taking the time to respond.
