I Think the road tax here is about £40 at the moment on my GTI per year. Dont know if it will be much more on the R32. If i plan on getting it would be nearly new from Germany and deffinatley not brand new. I can get a descent R32 from Germany for £18,000 about the price of a new GTI. Around 12,000 Kms, Sat Nav, Leather, Xenons,(Standard on R32) Armrest, Highline Comp, Multifunction Steering Wheel and the mobile thingi. I can reclaim VAT which is a good thing aswell but i will then need to pay customs to like import the car. That costs 10% of the cars value. I can more or less afford the car, my dad has also agreed to chip in what i need so i just need to make sure i sell my GTI then i can make a trip to Germany  Will make a trip to the stealers now as i have just woke up (summer life lol) Will keep you guys posted and thanx for the comments and help

I ran a standard Mk5 Gti last year and I liked it but I traded for an R32 which I love , it just gets under my skin like no other car I've owned, of course I live in Ireland so there aren't many about as the road tax here is £980 (1380euro), but its worth it
R32 no more (had a meeting with the scenery) :(

No brainer - R32. Better traction, more power and better exhaust note :smug:
Cass

....Not quite a no-brainer. The GTI feels much more agile and responsive to drive. The R32 feels much heavier to drive. Yes it has excellent traction but not significantly more performance and the GTI can be modded far more easily. Great V6 exhaust music but drinks more fuel. They're both excellent cars and it's just down to test driving both and personal preference.

Having owned both, I can honestly say that wasn't what I found, yes the GTi is lighter, but a little weezy above 4500 rpm where as the "R" still keeps pulling.

RR - Agreed. I had the option of buying an R32 when I got the GTI. I tried both back to back. I've always liked FWD and 4WD motors and both have different handling characteristics. After the test drives my wife said "Well......" My response was "It's like driving an old friend" and chose the GTI. The R32 is a bit more of a beast, but also a bit bling in some respects. I prefer the more understated look. That said, everyone should have the option of driving/owning an R32 and it is always sensible to test drive it back to back with a GTI.

....I forget sometimes that mine is modded and keeps pulling at higher revs. Yes, the .:R has plenty of 'grunt' - It's a great car.

Went to the stealers today, they were asking £27,000 pounds for an R32, including Zenons, Leather, DSG, Arm Rest....was abit shocked. Asked about the ED30 he said they are not Available here in Spain or Gibraltar (we get our cars from spain) and its a model made exclusive for the UK as they have the biggest market for hot hatches. I think im gonna go to Germany, i have seen about 4 to 5 R32's availbale for about 28,000 euros which is around £19,000 for an R32 (not bad imo) I am looking for something with, Sat Nav, Leather, Front Amrest with 6 CD Changer, Multi Functional Steering Wheel, Xenons, Parking Sensors....Anything else i should try and find?? I beleive the highline computer is included with the steering wheel?

Reading all the posts so far I should add the following:

1.  I found that the R32 quite noticeably drank more fuel than my standard GTI - about 25% more... maybe it was because I just couldn't stop listening to that awesome V6 engine
2.  The R32 is heavier than the GTI and so less nimble - it is notcieable but very subtle.
3.  Everything else about the R32 is just great and if I had to choose between a standard GTI and the R32 there would be no contest - the R32 wins hands down. Thats just my preferance.
4. Listen to me and get the R32 if you can afford it - you won't regret it
