16v Pressure plate on an 8v
« on: 16 February 2004, 12:45 »
Has anyone heard of having to fit a 16v pressure plate on an 8v if you hike the power above 125bhp?

I read it on a website the other day that between 125-160bhp a 16v plate is needed and anything above that you need an uprated friction disk also.

My cars prbably running at about 140+ ish and it slips when you floor it and the revs get up above 3000. On the motorway it is a nightmare   >:(  (brand new clutch aswell....)

vr6 is correct, the new 8v clutch will easy handle your 140hp. (I know for a fact that they will take a lot more than that ;)). There must be a fault with the adjustment or the clutch itself. You can fit the 16v pressure plate for more clamping if you have big hp.

I use LUK clutches, no probs so far. Another fault could be the oil seal and bush in the 1st motion shaft are worn and letting gear box oil onto the plate, just a thought.

I think he told me the gearbox had been recon. They probably didn't bother.

I found this on www.jwelty.com:-

Guidelines for the 210mm clutches: for under 125hp - stock pressure plate and stock disc; for under 160hp - 16V pressure plate and stock disc; over 160hp, use the sport pressure plate and sport disc.

My clutch is a brand new VW clutch with a new presure plate. ???

Im going to ring the bandits tomorow (Volkspares/Big boys toys)  'its not slander if its true'

They took in total 2months to get my car finished, wish i had gone somewhere else or just done it myself, i could have done it myself in less time but they siad they could have it done in less than a week  >:(

FOUND SOME MORE INFO.... :(

Rapid Parts Clutch Information:-

RAPID'S RECOMMENDATION: When it comes to VW clutches, most people don't realize just how good the stock clutch is. People have the tendency to think "if it costs more, it must give me better performance," but in the case of your VW, this rationale doesn't always hold true. Our recommendations are intended to give you the right amount of clutch for your application without going overboard. We recommend the following upgrades for basic performance driving:

? We recommend the 210mm Sachs standard clutch disc and pressure plate for most normally aspirated cars up to 120 BHP. Cars that have 200mm or smaller clutches should upgrade to a 210mm clutch. (When you upgrade, don't forget to buy a 210mm flywheel and 9 flywheel bolts!)
? We recommend the 16V 210mm pressure plate and standard disc for modified engines up to 160 BHP and revs up to 7000 rpm. 8V cars with 210mm clutches should upgrade to the 16V pressure plate and Sachs standard disc. The 16V pressure plate has 124 lbs more clamping force than the 8V 210mm pressure plate, but still has a light pedal feel.
? Any 4 cylinder car with more than 160 HP should use Sachs Sport pressure plate and disc.

The standard 8v clutch should be able to handle your engine i think.
Either way you are going to have to get a new clutch.
I think in the long term it would be better to get a sachs sport clutch. That will cost you a few quid  :D
If you want some help then what are you offering?  ;)
