remaps?

Hey all,
People tell me that remaps cant be detected by people like, vw, insurance etc.

i dont know anythnig much about remaps and i dont understand how they cant detect it. surely if a company who does the map can detect and download it, then surely others can??

if anyone has any info or links to info on this, id love to read up on it.

I informed my insurance company straight away, not sure it would be a wise idea to 'hide' it from them, but as for VW, I have been advised that although they can't detect the actual map, they can see how many times the memory has been re-flashed (if thats the right term!?), but I suppose the fitter would have to be quite switched on to check this...

If you get engine problems requiring ECU check, then they will discover.

I wouldn't be so sure... any excuse not to pay out. Having seen an insurance assessor checking over my car after a very minor accident, I can imagine a pretty thorough check when big money's involved.

Horror story. My father in law accidently knocked a girl over and she had bad head injuries. She just stepped out he had no chance of stopping in time. He was literally doing 20Mph having just pulled onto the main road. The girl was really poorly and was uncontious for first couple of days. It was a stock people carrier with the only mod being a cup holder.  Naturally the police as part of the investigation took his car away. They had it for a month (not sure why it took that long) but they gave it a proper good looking over.
The girl's parents were rightfully worried sick which then turned to anger and the case will continue (in the hands of the insurance) for a long time to come.
Moral is: Be honest with the insurance company, he was not to blame and the accident was just that an bad accident but if there had been anything remotley wrong with the car or any reason for the insurance not to handle the case he would probably be locked up.
BTW the girl is OK now but not 100% yet

It's as Pabs says - TELL YOUR INSURERS!! Otherwise you could be looking at a jail sentence, huge personal expense in damages claims against you, and what about your conscience in such a tragic accident?

Also, VW CAN tell - Perhaps not your dealer but if they send your ECU to Bosch in Germany it's easy.

I have Revo which is switchable and I switch to stock for servicing and discussed it all with my dealer even before I had a remap. I had a service last week with a VW ECU update which would have wiped my remap. I'm running on stock map currently before going back to my Revo tuner JKM....Did 409 miles to GTI Inters at the weekend and the Mk5 GTI is a fast car even standard. The main difference is that I can sometimes overtake with the remap in places I wouldn't do as standard.
