Just not sure I believe garage advice

I posted a topic a while back re front wipers (sorry for repitition). Basically they have gone senile. When I switch to intermittent, they pause before starting normal speed wipe, which they continue until I switch off. The moment I switch to off they stop wherever they are at the time (have to time it well to get them to stop in the right place).

Normal speed position does nothing at all. Fast wipe position works normally. Wash-wipe works fine but after 3 wipes they stop randomly accross the screen.

The garage have told me that this is caused by the motor which will cost around £200 fitted (I can fit myself, but apparently part is about £150).

Doesn't seem logical to me - if everything worked fine apart from the park position, then I could understand that it might be the switch in the motor.

Has anyone else had the same odd symptoms? Just don't want to replace motor to find its the same - I did this twice with the rear wiper which still stops wherever it feels like!!

can you not get a motor cheap from a scrappy, be as tenner well spent first!

I have had the problem of switching the wipers onto intermittent and they just keep going with me having to switch the ignition off when there in the parked position to get them to stop, turned out just to be the indicator stalk that was faulty and I'm a firm believer in trying the cheepest option first when trouble shooting a problem !

     OOPS      I did mean wiper stalk !

Presume you mean wiper stalk - how much is a new one, baring in mind it operates the trip computer too.

Someones always breaking a golf, get them to stick it in the post. Im sure they'll confirm it was working at the time.

what yr is the golf Mk2? can do a MK2 wiper stalk as sometimes the metal tab behind breaks off this causes problems switching them off.
If the motor is working then its not the motor could be the wiper mech is worn.
£200 for a wiper motor even from VAG is daylight robbery
as people state a scrappy will be a tenner
but in all honesty points to the wiper stalk

Thanks - what is the wiper mesh and what does it so? There is no problem stopping them, but they stop immediately without returning to base.

Do you know exactly what the relay does. Reason I ask is, I guess it has a role in the timing between intermittent wipes and stopping at base. But I wouldn't expect it to control the effect of each position of the stalk.

This problem occured all at once, so it must be one thing which is causing the wipers not to stop at park and the various positions of the stalk to cause the wrong things to happen. Right? or not?

i got quoted £110 recently for them to replaice my motor (im guessing you mean the wiper motor!) so I went to a scrappy, got one for £20 and did it myself within half an hour !
