ok ... lowering?
« on: 18 May 2007, 22:59 »
hey,

Im getting really confused over how to lower my car

Do i need to use coilovers (what exactly are they/what do they do?) or a "lowering kit with springs etc ..."

sorry i know this must seem like a dumb question  :smug:

depends how much you want to spend. you can go up to -40mm on the shockies you already have by just buying aftermarket springs such as apex or eibach. will cost ~£100

if you want proper handling get a full kit from weitec or koni, with uprated (or adjustable) shockies and springs to match the height. this'll cost about £300 or there abouts, but sometime second hand kits come up for a lot cheaper, but then you'll have to make sure there's no leaks in the shockies and they're in decent nick.

coilovers are fully adjustable, meaning you can change the ride height by compressing the springs further with the sleeves on the shockies. while much more expensive for a good set (£400 weitec i think? more for konis) you can set them up to exactly however you want. most people would shove the coilovers on and then just leave them (cos they're a pain to adjust when they're on the car ) and never change the height, which kinda defeats the purpose.

all depends how much you wanna spend!!

if you're not going to be adjusting ride height after you initially set it up - DON'T bother with coilovers!

If you're shocks are still good - then buy a set of Eibach springs, they are simply head and shoulders above other springs in terms of handling and ride comfort. (I've tried a few sets trying to save money, in the end bit the bullet and bought the Eibachs and was astounded!)

If you're shocks are poor then buy Boge turbo if you're on a budget, and Koni yellows if you've got plenty of coin, both work well with the Eibachs!

GAZ shocks are supposedly quite good too.

Theres my 2penneth!

Cheers guys

i finally understand  :smug:

I was looking to lower it by 40mm as the roads round me are pretty crappy ... lots of speed bumps and stooof! So if i was to buy some eibach springs and use the shocks already on the car that would be ok?

thanks again

Yes Eibach springs work fine with the original shocks.
