I think the GTi alloy's require a special repair job, as unlike most alloy's you can't get away with painting them some shade of silver, their a polished finish, then clear coated.

The GTI alloys are black underneath (like the M5's). They are chrome painted over the top and then polished off.
The chrome paint is very expensive. Something like £95/100 for 4litres. The cheaper "silver" looking paint is around £30/40

My Monza 2's looked like they had been machined, there was a definite radial pattern to them, something like what you'd expect from being turned in a lath, not at all nasty, just noticable.

This isn't my wheel, but if you zoom in you can see the effect

PS. I've seen a few cars with the standard silver finish repair jobs on the alloys and to be honest with you, you cant really tell that much. When i handed my car in to be done there was a TT there which had been done with the standard silver finish and it didnt look that bad. It doesnt have the gloss or teh shine as the more expensive chrome finish but still i wouldnt knock it.

Just pray to god that you dont kerb it because it will bug you. You can clean, polish and wax your car till the cows come home but it will still look naff is there is a few kerb dents on the alloys 

Now i keep well away from the kerb. Dont care if the car sticks out a bit as long as the alloys are safe

the monza 2's appear to be darker than the standard 17" monza's....is that how they are?

^^^^ Yes thr 17's don't have the grey insert, like what the 18's does

Agreed. My 18"ers are the same - not that noticable bur still evident under close inspection. Not Porsche quality despite the price !!!
