How smooth is your Gti?
« on: 26 April 2007, 18:51 »
How smooth is it on tickover? Mine is ok, but you can feel a very slight wobble in the rpm?? She's on optimax which seems better than other super/higher octane fuels.

Also, a bigger problem, I've noticed that every time I put my right foot down, the car seems to take off forwards rather quickly inducing a large smile and very low mpg figures. Has anyone else found this??

i agree on the shell fuel, mine diffently runs smoother on that fuel, problem is im not allowed to fuel her up at shells cus "er in doors" wants her flippen tesco clubcard points, but i often get a cash tips in my job if i pass  a shell garage without her in the car, the car gets a drop or two of the "good stuff", and i get comments on saying, "god we havent needed to fill up in 7 days, that tesco fuel really lasts dear!    she doesnt know my password on here so im safe!

How much is this Shell fuel? And what are the main advantages of the expense stuff apart from more getting more out of the tank? There isnt many Shell garages around here only Tesco, Texaco and Sainsburys?

Mine has the wobble as well, makes no difference if I run on Shell, BP or Tesco super unleaded.  Dealer has changed a sensor at the recommendation of VW UK but this has made no difference.  Worth noting that my cars had the engine management upgrade recall and this has made no difference also.

Cars back in today for further investigation and to correct the steering which just doesnt feel right after the rack was replaced earlier this week.  Also my drivers side electric folding mirror has packed in.  Bad times!!

What "brew" of super unleaded is at your local Tesco.  I ask, because many Tesco sites are still using 97RON.  The Tesco 99RON super unleaded (supplied by Greenergy.co.uk), was proven to give clear power gains over BP Ultimate super unleaded (97RON), and the then Shell Optimax (98RON).  :nerd:

Obviously, Optimax has been replaced by Shell V-Power, which is also 99RON, and so should give identical performance as the Tesco 99 brew.

I normally run my GTI and RS4 on either Tesco 99, or V-Power.  Usually, V-Power in the GTI, and Tesco 99 in the RS4 - but I do swap around sometimes for a few tankfulls, and to be honest, can't really notice any difference.  However, if I'm unable to get either Tesco or Shell, and have to resort to either BP Ultimate, or the Esso SU, I can notice a difference, in performance and "smoothness".  In fact, BP Ultimate repeatedly actually causes a misfire in my RS4 -

How much is this Shell fuel?

The Shell V-Power is a little more expensive (about 4p per litre) than standard (95RON) unleaded, but MUCH cheaper than BP Ultimate (97RON), which is usually anywhere between 10 and 12p per litre more expensive.  Tesco 99 is usually the same as V-Power, or maybe 1or2p cheaper.  :nerd:

Oh, with Shell V-Power, you also get "V-Power" points, though WTF they can be used for . . .

And what are the main advantages of the expense stuff apart from more getting more out of the tank?

The 2.0T FSI is mapped to run on 98RON, as the optimum standard (for performance and fuel economy).  If you use less than 98RON (such as 97RON or 95RON), knock sensors monitor the engine, and will retard the ignition timing, thus reducing power, and drinking more juice in the process!  :nerd:

There isnt many Shell garages around here only Tesco, Texaco and Sainsburys?

Well, if your local Tesco has 99RON, use that, and get Tesco Clubcard points too.  :smug:

Thanks for your reply. Tesco do Super Unleaded? Is that 99ron? What does RON stand for ?

Yes my tesco is 99 ron, so im more a happy boy now,  think my car though needs a tune, had some chav in his rover 600, turbo something cus all i could hear was his "dump valve!!", and was neck and neck from 30mph to 70mph on a dual carriageway side by side. but from standing start, once agin DSG pulled me 2 car lenghts ahead with in a 500 yard dash. mind you i had 3 in the car but was abit worried even in sport mode i had to really floor it. I think she must be poorly, 3000 to service but seriously thinking of having word with stealers about this Engine management update to see if that will sharpen the cars performance
