Dead gearbox perhaps - Any ideas??

Ohhh the joys of life!! Just got a new radiator sorted, New tyres and the valver was running like a dream!
Over at my folks today and was turning round in the road; started to move backwards CLUNK as if I ran over something, moved forward after check underneath CLUNK again and gearbox oil pissing out but I couldn't see where?
Haven't got time to look at it till next weekend now too - there's nothing obviously missing or broken. Any ideas what the most likely thing to have died is given the low speed and full lock?

I had the same on another car albeit, rear wheel drive. Turned out to be the diff, a part that is incorporated in these gearboxes.
New gearbox perhaps???

Happened to me as well the Diff is held together by rivets which over time work loose get into the gearbox and shred the box before getting spat out leaving a nice hole in the side of the gearbox
Clunk could be the driveshafts or cv joint thats gone as well

I'm expecting the worse to be honest!! If there's a hole in the casing it's not even worth trying to get it refurbed!
I'm loathed to lob a second hand box in as you never know what you're really getting and I want a proper fix. If you add the cost of a second hand box and the refurb together I bet you're not far off buying one in that state already with a warranty!?
What should I be considering with the worst in mind?
Dave.

the clunk is caused by sheared diff rivets get caught up in the diff gears - a good test is to try & push the car back n forward in neutral. if the diff is gone then i will still lock up after pushing it back or forth so far.
done exactly same thing in mine. your very lucky if it hasnt split the casing 90% of them do. it cost me £250 to get my 16v box refurbed with the diff rivets replaced with the proper diff bolt kit.
get your original boxed refurbed is my suggestion
p.s. to anyone else with a 16v box that hasnt went yet. trust me it will. they all do!!! hence why loads of valvers have 8v boxes in them now.
