clutch cables
« on: 26 January 2004, 08:19 »
Hello on this fine monday morning :(

quick qestion - my clutch cable snapped...RAC man put another 1 on and that snapped too immediatelty ...he towed me to some garage he thought was OK.
They said it was my clutch itself?! this is strange as it has had a new clutch only 5 months (3000miles) ago.
I wondered if any of you have had simular experience with clutches and if i need to be on my guard with this garage.
any advice much appriechaited

Seems a bit odd for a new clutch cable to snap........something isn't right here.
Has it had the bulkhead mod? Not sure about 1985 models but certainly the earlier models suffered with the clutch cable grommet pulling through the bulkhead. The bulkhead used to crack and deform...........mod kit consists of a stronger plate.

Hi thanks 4 replying
I dont think it has had any mods although when i got the car it was almost impossible to change gear - new clutch solved it but it was getting tight... cable broke out of the blue 5 mnths down the line.
initial cost estimate= ?12 for new cable ;D
that breaks immeditaly
now - 4 hrs labour a new clutch so far.. >:(

i don't see how a clutch can break a cable tho im a bit mechanically challenged im afraid.

also they have lost the little metal + rubber thing that attaches the cable to the box!
these are 'hard to come by' says mr mechanic  and he wants me to locate 1 for him! I already rescued it once from the RAC man who didn't know what it was.

surely if it destroyed a clutch in 5 months the gearbox must be involved???

however I am 2 blame I think getting a golf cabby to commute 2000 miles a month could have been a bad move, but when she actually works I love driving her ...

do you know at which part fo the cable it snapped. if its under the drivers footwell, it may well have sheared on the bulkhead where the fault lies as rich has mentioned above. have a look under your driverside footwell and look where the clutch cable leaves the pedal and goes through the bulkhead to the engine. it should be pretty clear if there is something wrong there i reckon.

don't get ripped off with a new clutch if you already have had a new one.

if you said the clutch was fitted around 3k ago then it would still be under warranty,  the garage should take this into account. i had a case on a peugeot where the clutch fork drove itself through the sprung fingers resulting in not only clutch failure but cable too, ask the garage that fitted the clutch see what they say.
hope this helps

I demanded the cost of parts and labour for the faulty clutch and he agreed so bit of a result.
