5000rpm

hey dudes,
my 93 mk3 8v gti will only rev to 5000rpm and not the normal 6500rpm. it is very responsive on ecceleration and revs well as if its chipped, untill it gets to 5000.

any suggestions would be really helpfull.

Normal answer for a golf that won't rev above 5000rpm is that the timing is out...sound's like the belt is out 1 tooth ...i hope you know someone who can check your timing as they are a pain to check on the mk3

If not how long has the car done this and has it had any work recently

I have discovered after reading your post that i have exactly the same problem (5k limit) but coupled with poor starting, lumpy idle, pulsing power on acceleration up to 3k....

Im gonna check the fuel and ecu relays as well as cleaning the MAF hotwire, as im almost convinced thats the prob on boney's advice in my other post and reading an american vw forum.

Hope this helps - btw my car had the timing belt done in oct last year after the tensioner siezed and bust the belt. Dont know if the problem existed before that - but may be the cause as boney suggests here?

im on nights tomorrow so will have all day to take a look at the mfa, and said relays, might have the throttle body off too and give that a clean out. will also get my mate to check the timing sometime this week at his garage.

remember its the cam timing NOT the ignition timing you need to have checked

It can also be faults causing the ECU to go into "safe" mode.
To clear the ECU disconnect the battery completely for about 15mins.

it is possible to check the timing without a light.....you first need to remove the green plug from the gearbox and you should see the mark's on the flywheel (you may need to rotate the crank to see them). when this is lined up no1 cylinder is at tdc,you can then look at the cam pulley and hopefully this will be aligned with the timing mark's on the cover (refer to haynes for your model location and marking's as these differ)

if taking your car to a garage make sure they have a timing light that screws into the gearbox cap as this is the only accurate way for a correct reading....

Hi, i had the same prob when i brought my car, ran perfect upto 5000 rpm. i checked all the usual timing and fuel options but it was none. Took it to a specialist and it turned out to be some faulty wiring, had eroded through the outer plastic to reveal the bare wire. Just a thought if the others dont fix it, unfortunately i dont know where this faulty wiring was, never got told.

ok. went to me mates garage yesterday and hooked her up to the diagnostics.

found the cam timing fault so going to have that checked on monday.

also the air intake sensor was missing to bought one from main steelers @ £24

there is a home made cat replacement on with nowhere for the lamder sensor so the berk who i bought it off just left it unplugged.

so will get that soorted too on monday.

should be a different car when its done.

i only had the car 2 weeks so just getting started.

will update you all on monday with what we find.
