MK3 FUEL SMELL PROBLEM

I HAVE A MK3 N PLATE 16V.
 I KEEP GETTING A SMELL OF FUEL IN THE CAR, AND IT IS A STRONG SMELL, IT SEEMS WORSE WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD BUT STILL DOES IT WHEN THE ENGINE IS WARM AND IT IS NOT ALL THE TIME.

I HAVE HAD IT CHECKED FOR A FUEL LEAK AND THERE IS NOT ONE , ANYBODY GOT ANY IDEAS WHAT COULD BE CAUSING IT , THE WIFE SAYS IF WE CAN'T FIND THE PROBLEM I WILL HAVE TO SELL THE CAR!! 


 HELP PLEASE!!!

Women! Just tell her to shut up unless she has anything useful to say! :laugh:

If its not happening all the time then its gonna be difficult to fix!

Things like is it worse with a full tank of fuel. Or do you get good fuel consumption?
But then its unlikely to be unburt fuel.
Maybe the fuel tank vent is blocked. Or there is a leak in the return pipe.

Just guessing really mate.

DOESN'T MATTER HOW MUCH FUEL IN THE TANK , STILL GET THE SMELL, CONSUMPTION IS GOOD BETWEEN 30 AND 35 DEPENDS ON HOW HARD I DRIVE,

DEFINATELY NO FUEL LEAK MY MECHANIC AT VW RESCUE CHECKED EVERY INCH OF THE FUEL PIPE SYSTEM AND GOT TWO OF THE OTHER LADS TO HAVE A LOOK AND DEFINATELY NO LEAK.

take the caps lock off mate! Its considered shouting around here!

I doubt if they checked the return pipe properly unless they did it up on a ramp with the engine revving!

With that consumption I would say you are probably not losing anything anyway so no leaks!
So my only guess is the fuel tank vent.

has it got a pollen filter if so replace it and spray sum stuff on it

Sounds like a Lambda Sensor fault.

The Lambda sensor continuously detects oxygen in the exhaust gas. So as the output from the sensor changes, the ECU changes the quantity of fuel injected which alters the mixture strength.

So in theory the sensor makes sure that the mixture strength is always correct, if the sensor is faulty it will cause to over fuel, hence the smell of fuel.

Vag-com should pick up the fault.

Have had vag-com checked and no problem with lambda probe , also replaced evap canister and still same problem, seem to be worse in the morning when it is cold,  ie when choke is on.

any ideas please really getting me down now, love the car but this is a big problem
