Apologies for hijacking the thread, Tom when you said your mates had probs fitting 13cm speakers I thought you meant in the doors ! I've never seen that size in the dash and imagine it would be a nightmare to fit oversize speakers into such a small space, the correct size for the dash speakers are 3.5 inch''

more appologies from me!

the problem you mentioned with the connectors is the problem we had! thats why the plastic cover bent and has snapped in another car i have seen! the one i had input into though has since been sorted with the above mentioned spks but a jbl version, sounds sweet, he has some pillar mount tweeters aswell now, they make such a difference.

In my mk2 I have an old school alpine 35x4 head unit and cd changer (in glovebox) in my mk 2, JBL power series (metal cone nice speaker) in dash positions and some standard jbl 6x4s in rear shelf supports. its not bassy at all even though I have dynamatted the areas where they are but it is nice and clear and crisp.

In  my Bora I have a 4x60 alpine mp3 head unit with all sorts of fancy time correction stuff on it and a 600wrms alpine V12 monoblock amp with a new generation type R 12" sub, with factory speakers in car and that sounds awesome, so would recommend an alpine mp3 unit, I used to mate this with jbl speakers in my old car (pug dont ask) and that sounded really nice.

I'd just like to add that the alpine mp3 headunit I mentioned above is now in the mk2, the sound quality with the JBLs is very good. Still a bit lacking in bass, but thats probably due to the small speaker size. Am looking at amping a set of components into the doors and run the crossover to the 3.5" JBL in the dash so that that recieves the highs.

nice to hear your up and running! its up to you but personally I would leave the JBLs in the dash running off the HU, maybe add an inline bass blocker ( couple of quid, halfrauds ) on the + wire. two reasons why.

firstly, the crossover high 'output' will be too high really for the JBLs as they are essentially 'full range' speakers, basically only the tweeter part of the JBL coaxes will be working, silly to waste the proper backcone part, may give a noticable boost to noises like cymbal's or high voices for example.

secondly, you will get the tweeters with the componant set you buy and they are supposed to run off the high crossover output anyway so why not use them?!
nice looking tweeter locations can be done much easier than this but this is one of the best ive seen.

even whack the tweeters near by where the grab handles would be at the top of the doors ( on the roof liner though!)  you will notice a lot of difference if you use the proper tweeters.

Cheers mate, was hoping the crossover would do the same job as the bass blocker but obviously not, lol. Do I need one of these for each of the two speakers?
