slowly dying idle speed

hey up...been a while since i've had a problem..... the symptom is..... my idle speed gradually gets less during the course of ..say..2 months...i followed the tune up procedure as  found in maitenance section....after which she would idle perfectly at around 900 rpm. now its taken the 2 months to get to 600 rpm. i've changed the temp sender. this happens when the engine is cold and at running temp. also during the winter a couple of times as i've stopped at junctions/lights she totally dies...never had that problem before. i clean out the gunk  ( if any) regularly from the breather hoses/crankcase valve/throttle housing. all relevant hoses have been checked for cracks. i also use injection cleaner with petrol on a regular basis. the idle valve was bought on ebay about 1 year ago. any ideas?
also a question for all you trainspotters......i have a campaign edition '88 helios blue 8v...my passenger side door mirror has a blue tint to it.....the drivers side doesn't...which is the original?

MK2s never had blue tinted glass, I'd like to know where that one came from!!!

I'd start by replacing the idle screw, and check the idle switch is clicking when the throttle is closed.  Also did you replace the blue sender with one from VW? GSF ones are pants ;)

yeah.. blue tint doesn't feel right....i replaced the temp sender with a vag one...i'll check the the idle switch...you say when the throttle is closed, when should it click...when i first start the ignition? and which switch is it..top or bottom? i've read an earlier reply you gave to a post concerning checking the o ring on the  idle screw...i'll do this.

it should click whenever the throttle is closed, its the one underneath :)

hello hello...i hav'nt been able to go anywhere near the golf in the last weeks...works been manic...though i seem to have fixed my problem by just changing the air filter! would this really affect the idle speed? now i get a constant idle rpm of 1000. one question regarding the idle switch....what is the excact procedure for hearing the click? i think the car should be idleing..then do i rev and let it drop to listen for a 'click'?...sorry to seem dumb on this..thanks

the switch should click just as the throttle hits the stop :)
