use the search function to look for temperature sender issues, sounds like it could be your problem.

fueling problem of sorts I would say seems to be running far too rich, smell any petrol when its running? put some paper by the exhaust for a few seconds and post what you can see/smell on it. how do you start it again? worse in cold warm?

actuly thinking about it some times i can smell somthing while im driving some times, yeh seems to start worse in colder weather, but at the same time is randum it cold start fine, revs were they should be then wen i stop down the road it will cut out, some times wont start properly need to apply accelerater.

errm if it fueling problems what would a fix be??

ok il place a paper by the exaust 2day and post what i see, thanks people!!!!

fueling problems CAN be one of the hardest to sort out you will know if you smell petrol, start it walk round it and smell round the back, dont obviously stick your nose right by the exhaust but you should be able to tell. if it takes a few minutes to start again it could well be running rich as it will be slowly flooding. To begin with or after being left for some time, really the car should start ok(or maybe not as my knowledge is generally of carberettors, not injections so I dont know if it could cause starting problems). it could be fuel pump but generally this would not cause excess petrol consumption and the car isnt that old so no major componant like pump or anything else SHOULD have failed, could even be a small electrical problem, fuel sender or something along those lines.

hi, my main consern isnt really the excess fuel consumption its the actual cutting out, cause its so dangerous! when it cuts the out the steering wheel locks with it etc

i put a paper by the exaust little black specs cum on it...and u cud kinda wipe them and they made a streek if this helps??

but i cudnt really smell any petrol...

thanks so far ppl!

of course the fuel itself isnt too much of an immidiate problem but it can be very closley linked with cutting out and rough running but if you couldnt smell any on tickover it is unlikely to be the cause then. were the specs solid like coal or liquid like oil? oil is the most likely, coal looking solid bits is doesnt sound at all good, how is the engine for oil? start it again when you have time, let it warm up, rev it not too high about 3000 rpm and look for blue smoke, also if you can look as you are driving particularly as you change gear. when you say a paper do you mean a newspaper? if you can try it with plain white or card if all else fails.

hi again, yeh it was plain white paper, and i would say it was more like oil, and i think i do have a oil leak.... under the engine somewere

i have been told my car gives off some smoke when moving but then they said its fine for cold wether, and on a dignostics it said it was the MAF, but i changed that and made no diff...

theres a broken pipe, and rubber one which i noticed 2day, and its gone hard, some kinda air pipe as far as i know, and its kinda linked with the MAF, but i wrapped it up and it didnt really make a diff, i will try getting a new one of them....

thanks ppl any more well would be well apricated!

when the car is first started there could be and normally is some white smoke in the cold but there should never be any BLUE smoke it will be very easy to see if its happening it WONT look like mist it should be a definate blue colour and it will kind of pump a lot more than just the white misty stuff(water in the exhaust system) when you rev it if its burning oil but it would have to be a serious amount to cause the problems you are describing but it could except really the excess petrol. The broken pipe, if it comes off the air filter towards the block and looks sort of ribbed like a vaccume cleaner pipe this does cause these problems, my friend had a split in his pipe near the jubalee clip that holds it on and it did pretty much what you are describing, but he wouldnt notice the fuel (too much money!) however as it was near the clip, a folded tea towel between the clip and pipe has proved a pretty good seal for now. These pipes are very important and to be absolutly sealed as they are supposed to be under pressure. I cant see them being that cheap to get hold of, those kind of moulded pipes usually aren't, breakers yard possibly or independant vw specialist, the one by me is pretty cheap, compared to dealer anyway!as long as I am thinking of the correct pipe as the mass air flow sensor is pretty new to me. Bring back the good old days, minimal electrics, no relays or sensors to confuse things, just air and fuel that mix then are compressed till they explode, how hard can it be!
