if it can be welded then weld it, shame to throw away a car, especially a vw, if the rest of it is ok. besides if everyone had that attitude then there would be NO mk1's on the road at all!

jasonpi-restore the bad boy!!!!!!  ;)

yeah, welding is fine.  but you wont cure the problem. your just putting your problems off for another day.

striping the car down and replacing a whole section like that is quite simply uneconomical unless the car has some intrinsic value to you, eg, its special cause you had your first shag in it or something.

but if the car is devoid of such sentimentality, bin it. save your money, and find one that hasn't got a rotten arse. there are plenty of VWs still out there that are okay.

again, personally, with all its known problems i'd be asking a very serious question - what don't you know about? strip it to the shell. the story will get much worse before it gets better.

i did bin a D reg golf driver last year. the floorpan needed welding. one side of the car was immaculate, the other side was my grandmothers patched quilt. But the car was quite sound, the engine was okay, everything was okay and worked. But it was rotten. Bin.

jason, if i had the spare cash id buy it back off you cause its a bloody good car, yeah its got a bit of rust but its 18ys old and been at a seaside town all its life!!!!, dont bloody scrap it, theres many a car out there thats been welded and as long as the work has been done properly the rust will not spread!!, i would not go to the extent you are going to goto but i wouldnt scrap it, id get then small bits on the floor done (so it is legal cause clearly your mot tester had his contact lenses out that day!!) then sell it if you arent happy with it, the amount of tax that was on it and a full mot youll make some ontop of what you paid me for it, as i said it was my 2nd car(run around and was never gonna be a prime show car!!)

agree with Knite there have welded many a car and if you do it right it doesnt spread at all,of course there is a limit but if its just isolated areas and not gapping rot its easy enough to sort and will last as long as you want the car for,the mk2`s are better than other makes of cars from this era,but there are still areas under the car that start to go and will start to give owners grief in a few years time..
