Larry
i myself got a 1.8 20v gti and there is no 1.8 20v and the only model is 1.4 and 1.6!

The 1.8 20v GTI bhp 125 and top speed 120 to 125mph and mpg is around 34 to 36 but i ain't sure but i am sure one of the lads will back me up to this
0-60 10 sec i think !  ???

Yep, the 1.8 Gti from 97-99 was 125 bhp, with an official figure of 0-60 in 9.6 secs, mpg is 34.  Not sure about top speed though!

I recently got a company car and all it says on any of the pieces of paper is 1.8 20v - there is mention of GTi or turbo.

Should i be able to hear the turbo winding up - i have listened to it when accelerating  and could not clearly tell if it had a turbo - does this mean it is a GTi but has 125bhp.

believe me if you have a turbo youd know about it!! they go like stink!!!, times and figures all correct for 1.8 20v gti as thats what i have also!! havent got me log book to hand to have a look but im sure it says golf gti!! they did not make a non gti 1.8 20v, it was either that or the 1.8 20v turbo or the 2.0 8v (which replaced the 1.8 20v gti) and all these were badged as 'gti' ;D
