Correction, although my ignition coil had broken - this wasn't causing the cutting out problem. It was the crank speed/engine speed/TDC sensor.

Awesome GTI nr Warrington, diagnosed the problem in about 5 minutes with a computer. Total cost ?150 +VAT.

good to hear you got it sorted!
i had the the crank sensor changed right at the start of my little journey of fault finding. but unfortunately it didnt make any differnce and cost me near on ?200 :'(.
when i grow up i want to be a VR6
