« on: 27 September 2006, 20:12 »
Hi again folks...I was coming home from work today when my power steering belt gave up the ghost (SNAPPED). I was just wondering how hard or easy it would be to fit a new belt ?
I have lost my Haynes manual that is why i need the help !

Thanks.....

easy to change, just loosen off the two bolts on the power steering pump, move it up, unhook the belt, move the pump back tight again and tighten the nuts back up, half hour job tops.

Yep.
Unless you break your alternator mounting bolt.
Then it takes a bit longer.
Eh, slick?
...
Slick?

You don't need to go anywhere near the alternator to do the pas belt you plum, that was to change the alternator belt, they are two different belts.

Its also a good idea to get a new tensioner as these are often rusty and bent. Have a look here in my project page for some pics and how to's

Beware! Suggest you don't drive the car with the pas belt missing as the pas belt drives the water pump! The alternator belt looks like it drives the water pump also but it doesn't because the double pulley on the water pump has a slip clutch made of a black plastic material. If the PAS belt is not driving the water pump pulley and stays fairly static the excessive slip on this clutch can overheat it and melt it.......

You're welcome........I'm not sure this applies to very late models though, a J plater I've seen had a single pulley on the water pump driven by the alternator belt, but the PAS was driven directly from the crank pulley to the PAS pump pulley with a very, very short belt...could be a mod of course....anyone know?   :undecided:
