Hi,
I am looking for a little help with my Mk 3 Golf GTI (8v and about 85K on the clock). The car is a good runner except for its frustrating habit of regularly stalling at lights, in traffic etc. From time to time when you dip the clutch as the car comes to a halt the engine revs will drop away to nothing and the engine will either stumble and recover or stall.
The problem occurs pretty regularly, often at least once on a quick trip of a couple of miles and sometimes upwards of half a dozen times on a cross country jaunt. The weather seems to make no odds and it will be just as happy to do it at the end of my road or a couple of hundred miles into a journey.
The car is regularly serviced, only does about 6K miles a year and just passed an MOT with no problems. Since I have owned the car it has had most of the ignition system replaced (plugs, HT leads, dist cap, coil), new exhaust (from behind the cat), new battery and that is about it. None of these have resolved the issue (not that I expected them to).
I have had it looked at twice. First mechanic said the lambda sensor was shot, although no fault codes were logged with the engine management system. Second time was during my last MOT where they said it was fine. Could this be the culprit? If so it looks pretty easy to swap out myself.
Any ideas gratefully received. Doesn't really bother me that much, but my girlfriend isnÂ’t too keen on driving it when it randomly stalls all over the place!
Thanks
Dave
