walk away from it mate.

You have no idea of how many miles this guy has covered and if he was legit he would have had it fixed ASAP.

there are plenty of other golfs out there.

No firstly the car passed m.o.y without speedo working (they dont drive it down the road so not checked) and secondly i was stopped years ago in my old astra gte 1.8 when i had a speedo problem,,, i.e. i had fitted an exchange speedo as old one had packed up and forgot to flick the switch over to suit wheel size on car so speedo was reading slow like 13mph at about 30mph the old bill noticed this by driving next to me and i just told them yes i know there is a problem with it but i know that 13mph on my dash is 30mph really and they left me alone lol.....

i take your point regards the MOT mate but u were lucky with the police....the standard guidelines are....

Any speedometer that is fitted to a vehicle must be kept in good working order whilst the vehicle is being used on a road.  The penalty for failing to have a speedometer in good working order is a fine.

However, if the speedometer develops a fault whilst being used or a defect has been discovered then all steps must be taken to rectify the fault with reasonable expedition.  This exception only  applies when the defect develops and must be repaired before the next journey.

hopefuly no forum members will get pulled anyhow

Depending on how it has failed, you may still be able to find the genuine mileage. If its the instrument itself then the ECU should still be recording the mileage and VAGCOM should be able to report it correctly.
