Tapits
« on: 12 February 2003, 11:32 »
I have a 92 Gti 8v and have problems with my tapits. Does any one know if they have hydrolic tapits or the old style adjustable one's. If they are Hydrolic is it head off and does anyone know the ruff price of this job.

Thanks

Not 100% sure if they are hydraulic, should be as my 86 8v is!
The way they adjust the tappets is by putting metal shims to take up the play. Doesnt need the head off, and not a too difficult job. Jsut need a haynes manual and a set of feeler guages. Can buy the shims from german and sweedish, but they come in about 30 different thicknesses so you need to check how much play you got in them b4 you buy them!

'danthevan', you are right they should be hydraulic, however, are you sure about the shimming? I thought that was done to the non-hydraulic tappets.
Here is a 'cut & paste' from my Bently that covers the VW Golf GTI 1985 to 1992:-

The single overhead camshaft is driven by the crankshaft via a toothed, steel-reinforced belt. The cam lobes operate the intake and the exhaust valves directly through hydraulic cam followers which use engine oil, supplied under pressure by the lubrication system, to maintain correct valve clearances. Dual valve springs and both upper and lower spring seats are used on the intake and exhaust valves.

You can change the hydraulic tappets without taking the head off, its dead easy. They are about ?6 each from GSF and all you need to do is take the camshaft off (might be worth doing the cambelt whilst you're in there).

Would you like me to dig out the proper workshop manual procedure for you?

'GolfGiT' there is also a procedure in the manual for checking hydraulic tappets for wear. Would you like me to dig that out for you too?

Thanks for the help, but I have just had the car MOT'ed and they said that it does sound like the tappits but it was actually the exhuast to manifold making the noise, the gasket was hanging off. Will get the car back this evening and just hope thats fixed the problem.
Thanks again for all your help
