Strange noise when I lift off the throttle

I've had my 1998 Golf GTI 1.8T a few weeks and since owning it I've noticed a slight noise every time I lift off the throttle.  It's not a loud dump valve wheeze like you hear on some cars.  I can only describe it as a slight whickering sound.  I've always assumed that this is normal sound for the turbo to make, but I've got to thinking that maybe it's not.  Is this usual?

can you describe it better? Never heard of a whickering noise before.

A sort of whinnying noise (no jokes about horses under the bonnet please).  Like a high-pitched stuttering whistle decending in tone that lasts for a second or so.  I can't describe it any better than that    It happens in all gears, throughout the rev range.  Any ideas?

thats the flutter valve, dump valve, actuator or what ever you wanna call it.

I read that its not good for the turbo when it makes that noise but it does sound cool. Think its like 20 odd quid from the dealership to replace.

Replace the crappy plastic valve for a propper one. You can either get a quiet re circ one or a full out pssssssshhhhhhtttt one. I like bailey when it comes to dump valves.

The actuator and 'dump' valve are two different things.

1.8t engines don't like atmospheric valves, so stick with the original VAG one. If the car is making a WRC type flutter, then it's on it's last legs and you should replace it as soon as possible.
