Thing is, i spoke to the last owner today and he seems to remember it having one too

Its all very odd to say the least.!!!!!!!

I'm at work at the minute , but I'll have look tonight (R reg VR6). Do you mean the front windscreen (etched) or on the dash(plate, like the mk4)?

It was on the dash on the left hand side. Black with the vin in white.
