What's the greatest Head Unit for the MK2?
« on: 25 February 2003, 23:17 »
:-/I've got an old black MK2 GTi,and although i do want to 'improve' it, i really don't want to ruin it, so although i want a decent new head unit, i don't want the simple styling of the dash to be overpowered by some flash radio.
What do you have in your golf? What colour, and make would you recommend??

Ive had an alpine head unit 3738R (christ i think thats the model- the one with a remote and dual pre outs) its about 3 years old now, but in my experience alpine have been in a league of their own.  The display is clear and functional no ott features and graphics and it illuminates green or amber (for the bmw drivers) but it has and still is serving me proud, I would check their website and see what the latest models and specs are about..It seem like most companies are going down the route of oel graphics, or flip up screen units :P

Hope this helps anyway

Cheers

my advice on anything that will look different is to try to not go more modern than the look of the car by a great deal, so no displays with leaping dolphins etc. I have a 4-5 year old alpine which  is black it is a triple cd shuttle changer that fits is the dash has a face of piece to stop thieving wotsits but does require external amps as has no internal one, these go in the boot anyway so no visibility issue there, sounds great and doesn't look obviously to modern for the facia which is, in my car, 15 years old after all.  Hope this is some help. Stear clear of silver in a mk2 as well fits excellent in mk3 but mk2 must be black facia really.:D

i say alpine too. i got the 7893R (i think) the green backlight is pretty much the same as the dash lights. styling is nice but simple and has excellent preouts for amps. i have had it about year and a half and its just started not taking copied cds tho but it has been in a hard crash :)

try looking at Nachamichi, they tend not to have so many gimics attatched, yet still make great sounding equipment.
www.customizedvehicles.com for a picture.

Oh i forgot to mention that they're audio may out value your car !
