Just so you get the idea about the tyres and suspension, this pic was running 185/55/15s on stock suspension -

This one has been lowered about 40mm and is running 195/50/15s and it had just been cleaned and polished !

What about checking if the wheels are balanced correctly?

Also, the window rubbers, if not a snug fit, will be noisy as well.

sorry to bring up ur pricing again but £250-£350 for the tank replacement still sounds way too much, i just bought a tank from euro car parts and was £117 including vat so fitting couldnt be £200 ? anyway its dun now. as for the rattling.. if its ur dash then as said b4 they do rattle a little, but have u tried the obvious, missing or loose screws on the dash mounting brackets ? they are a b@stard to locate and get to but this is also why the dont get checked or put back by garages. as its an old car u dont know how meny garages have looked at it b4. and unless a good garage has worked on it then they could of shifted it in and out quick, thats why alot of mk1 owners do there own work, or learn to.any noise comming from high speeds is because the roof doesnt insulate the outside noise as well as the hard tops, almost like driving with the window down abit, aswell as the resistance to airodynamics slightly. where du live anyway ? i could have a look and see if its normal... cheers, Dave P...

Dave, thanks for the tips. I live in Inverness, which is no doubt, nowhere near you!!

I took the car to Kwik Fit on Friday and got 4 new 195/50/15's put on and had the wheels balanced and aligned and i cannot believe the difference.  The guy at Kwik Fit informed me that one of my tyres was a different size to the others and had a slow puncture, which clearly was not helping with the rattling/shaking.

Its like driving a new car, steering wheel no longer shakes at high speed etc. Top Class.

Thanks to everyone for their advice.
