bodywork repair, snapped arial, bonnet wont shut, and some dents!

hi all

i wanna combine all my problems and keep them to this post

ill post up in the project section when ive done summat worthwhile lol, got the car yesterday, a 1.6 mk2 golf driver e reg with 102k on the clock

right, first, my bonnet was closed when i got it, opened it and no matter how hard i slam it, wont close again, think a catch is jammed somewhere??? any ideas

also got a few slight dents, im hoping to just tap them out with a rubber mallet or something, any reccomendations???

also theres plenty of rust patches lol, ive started sanding a few but its still a bit brownish, will i need to rust treat the area or just keep sanding until its raw metal?

another thing, the boot raising arm whatever theyre called are very stiff to pull up, is this normal or do they need replacing

also, the previous owner i think, tried respraying the panel above the back driverside wheel arch, the paint looks fainter than the overall color and its got an edge like its been masked, will it be ok if i sand it down with 1000 grit until its all smooth, then apply another layer of base coat then laquer

also, some pikies nicked the arial, me being a tit undid the nut holding the bottom arial thing and now its dropped down somewhere above the wheel arch, im taking it ive now gotta remove the whole panel now??? then get a new arial from the scrapyard and route the cable behind the dashboard, or can i get just the arial part and screw it in?

also, the rocker cover is a bit rusty, ive already covered the cam belt cover with 2 coats of silver hammerite (doesnt look fannytastic but looks better than rusted to shyatt) and im wondering will the rocker cover get too hot for the hammerite?

1. The bonnet catch return spring has probably snapped/dropped off.  Take the grill off and have a look   In the mean time, shove the bonnet release handle forward and it should close.

4. They should lift the boot up on their own pretty much as soon as you open the boot, if not they need replacing

Nope, turn the wheel to full lock and remove the plastic arch liner, few nuts hold it on.  Then you'll be able to gain acces to the inner wing and sort the aerial out.  If you jack the car up & remove the wheel you get more room to work, but I managed ok without.  The aerial wire is attached to the aerial usually, get a replacement then chop the aerial off the old one, tape the plug on the new one to the end of the wire then pull it thru from the dash side
7. Should work fine   P.S. Later digifant MK2s got a 2 piece plastic cambelt cover, if you can get one of those go for it, looks cleaner and much easer to remove!

also while i was on the way to the training place i go to, on the estate i found this near a unit that was closing down, the guy said i could have it



ive been told that if its used on an old car itll trap moisture and make it rust like a motherf**k*r, but on the tin it says that it can work on any car new or old and gets rid of rust aswell as preventing it

im really worried about it rotting away so i think im gonna pressure wash the underside and engine bay, then use this to keep it rust free, ive got roughly half a tin, 2.5 litres, will this be enough?

so on my list for the scrapyard ive got:
arial
boot raiser things
spring/something for the bonnet (will remove grill tomoz and investigate)
gti front grill/gti badges
some original wheel trims

anyone got any other ideas/suggestions

You might aswell get a new aerial as they're only a few quid, then you wont have the hassle of taking it off another car and it'll be nice and shiny too  - better yet, cut the old aerial off at the end of the wire, leave the wire under the wheel arch where it is and stick a grommet in the aerial hole til you get some bodywork done, then you can loose the hole altogether, thats what I do and it works fine 

Bin that Wax_oyl shat-pank - unless you're going to remove all of the under seal VW put on the car, but why would you want to do that, its serious hard work involving blow torches and lots of scraping with burning sh!t dropping on you and the wax-oyl isn't anywhere near as good as the factory stuff anyway  - just touch up using your hammerite 

I put hammerite on my scooter exhaust and its not burned off in the 2 weeks its been there so it should handle the heat of the rocker cover but proper engine lacquer would be better, I'm not sure how Hammerite would react to oil

Why not lose the wing aerial and go for a roof beesting?
The bonnet is probably just the catch in the slam panel needs a mass of WD40 and a bit of freeing up: I'd be more worried that it might be an indication of how little the bonnet has been opened by the previous owner 

If you can get to the dents and dings from the inside panels then a bit of soft wood "might" be enough or you can buy a cheap set of dollys on ebay; don't look in the girls toys section for them though 

If you're binning the Waxoyl then gimme it! Blooming marvelous stuff! Inject it into the sills: it doesn't trap moisture and is almost the same stuff that the factory injected into the hidden panels when the car was built. Never had an issue with it in the (cough) many years I've been playing with cars and it's made by Hammerite!

For the rusty bits I always use Kurust or Machine Mart Rust Converter (cheaper option by far!): gives you great protection and a good base to paint onto just make sure you cut back into good metal on all sides first.
