That's the one in bottles at Halfords (serious money, but they have the franchise), it is Castrol SLX 0W-40W Fully Synthetic,  it smells like plastic and is very pale, quite runny also in this Summer heat.

This stuff is will stand nearly 12000 kilos per square centimeter, before it stops lubricating. The very best mineral oil about 4000 kilos per square centimeter before it packs up.  Magnatec about 4800 kg per cm2. The very best Semi's about 5800 kg per cm2.

This stuff is in the bulk Workshop tanks at BMW and Audi for the M3 and bigger Audi  turbo units like the 2.7 turbo. It's under licence, so very difficult to get at other outlets and retailers.

You asked for the best, this is it, IMHO

I needed oil for the recent service for my 1.9 PD engine - it needs to be VW 505-01 spec. The oil and filter change takes 4.5 litres and Halfords sell a 4 litre container (around £37|), so you need to either buy 2,  or an extra 1 litre container for about £13.

I tried the VW dealer and the genuine oil sells for £37 (including vat) For 5 litres.

SLX is superceeded by castrol edge. Some still maintain the slx longlife print on the front on top of the edge logo. When i did my dads leon it was 505.01 (5w/40 i think) and from halfords which is similar prices to most other places.

Castrol SLX is not superceded friend, Castrol SLX is the trade name for Edge, only difference, is it available to Franchises and performance workshops in Bulk ONLY.

SLX comes in many grades. It is special Long life Oil - BMW standards for factory build as delivered.

0w - 40w
0w - 40w
5w -30w
5w - 40w
10 - 40w
SLX - M3 speciial for M3,Z4,640 series.

Halfords cornered the market for the Retail franchise, some say the Castrol Bulk delivery gear is one notch better than the Edge.  Special synthetic pollymers for extra molecular strength........and so on.

Now you know.

Castrol Formular RS fully synthetic is now superceded by Edge, due to the marketing sector carve up (go to the Castrol site, it's all explained). If you have a 180bhp Turbo with piston slap  .....worn & noisey valves....smokes more also..... shove - Castrol RS 10W - 60W in the unit. I will go one whilst you save for an engine rebuild, or decide to dump the car on the Used market.

Dont waste your money on this, unless turbo or over 150 bhp normal aspirated units.
