You can get an idea of the condition of the axle bushes by having just having a look with a torch, on mine you could clearly see the rubber had cracked and perished.  Cost me £50 for the poly bushes and took a day to do, hardest part was removing the brake pressure regulator.  An independent shouldn't charge more than £200 to do the hard work for you...

I had to get mine done at 75k on my gti 16v, cost me £150 which ain't too bad really, pig of a job by all accounts.

Made a huuuuge difference, was crashing around all over the place before and tight as a badgers a**e after!
