Asking too much?!
« on: 26 June 2006, 11:47 »
I went to have a look at a GTi 8v on the weekend...

It was Hillious Blue or something Deep Blue Met... Looked nice then on closer inspection of the car I found a dent in the passenger rear door near the handle, The front big bumber had been screwed in once side (using normal B&Q Screws), The paint work above the side bumbers you know between the windows and the side skirts was matt in colour all round and below it was properly polished and mirror in looks...

Interiour 131,000 miles had shown on the drivers seat there was a nasty hole all the way down to the metal frame on the side bit (holds you in) and the same on the bottom of the seat same area... It had a push button start installed and wouldnt turn over with the key (which was a replacement) the gear gaitor surround was a little ripped.

Engine Bay, Not overly clean but clean'ish with aparently new head gaskget changed, new belts, no oil on filler cap, nor in the water.

MFA worked fine, A little hard to find gears, and the throttle cable very stiff, the 8v wasnt greatly punchy but more smooth all the way up to 100mph on test drive. The exhaust was knocking aparently on a bar or something and it had been lowered 60mm on springs from what I could see

When driven for 15 mins or so I watched him drive it back into the garage and a bit of blue smoke but not billowing out but noticable

The Service book had been stamped all the way up to 120,000 and it had only half the V5 Document?!? Not the right half you know with all the slips you can rip out and keep...

No major bills and for some reason an old insurance document...

The guy wanted £1000 is he Asking too Much?

Think hes asking way to much.

I picked up my 1988 'E' 5 door 8v, with full history, 11 months mot, body work not perfect but by no means a rust bucket, with full leather interior and all 4 electric windows for only £500 and i'm only the 2nd owner!

Far too much, i wouldn't bother with it whatever the price!  Head gasket being done, blue smoke, ripped seats, bad gear change, starter button fitted, exhuast knocking, stiff throttle cable.....

Lots of work to do there.

Sounds like it's not even worth a third of what he was asking!

I'm selling a decent 3 door 8v, take a look..

I thought I should stay clear of that one i saw on sunday...

If he offered for say 500 or something I would take it simply cause the other 500 I would have saved could have gone to repairing it a little...

I will look up at that 8v and I am looking to buy within 3/2 weeks time

Cheers for input chaps and please carry on commenting on this one... I know what im looking for and know as soon as I move a golf if it feels right or not...

You will know as soon as you find a decent one, TBH the one you mentioned doesn't even sound like it's worth £500 from what you said

Thing with Mk2 GTi's is that there are SO many of them, so you can afford to be picky.

You won't get something stunning for £1k, but you'll certainly get something usuable with a bit of life left in it for sure!
