would be nice to hear a unbiased opinion after you've tried both cars. :)

Well I've tested them both and both have good qualities about them

Both cars where the same age and had the same cabin specs, both in great condition...shows how with a little care they stand the test of time (both p reg). The 8v was such a smooth engine, at home on the B-roads as well as through town. It had a nice delivery of power and would definately suffice as my next car ....BUT...I'm after something that can give me more of a grin factor in the performance department...so this is where the 16v was the winner.
I drive a 1.6sr New Beetle where the gears are set so that you must use them to get a grin, so this fact helped me with the 16v. I've heard a lot about the 8v being better on low down torque, but really couldn't see this as such a factor. On the B-roads the 16v did have me grinning more. Both cars had upgraded suspension, Milltec 'zorsts and performance filters. On a motrway at 70mph the 8v was reading 41.8mpg and the 16v 38.5, so the difference here wasn't too bad....around town the 8v read 34.7kpg and the 16v 32.4...so again not too much difference.

I'm going to see an AMD fettled car tonight...16v, and will see how this does as is supposed to offer better mpg as long as the happy foot doesn't go too wild.

So it looks like a 16v for me...but the 8v is also a lovely car

Drove the AMD one tonight...absolute fun...and got 34.3 around town and 41.6mpg on the Motorway doing 70(+or-10 ).

The car is 2 owners and has done only 3-4k a year as a second car, and is owned by a chap who works for his dad in a repair/garage...so it has wanted for nothing.

A question though....it is a n reg 16v... and has black paintwork with a slight silver fleck in it..is this a correct VW colour?? Just asking as the paint is fantastic..I have checked for accident damage as it's so good, but can see none, or detect any filler with my magnets...he did look confused when I was running them over the paint...they are in velvet pouches as not to scratch

The car is great and agreed a price of 3k...has Jamex 35mm lowered shox..17"OZ Polaris wheels...Milltec 'zorst...AMD 170bhp/150ftlbs chip with proven dyno sheet...VAG front+rear spoilers and side skirts...total closure and interior is mint except for a f*g burn in the seat in the rear and a slight but repairable nick in the drivers seat...full history..all old MOTs including new one today...and paint is immaculate. All the electrics work..sunroof but no A/C...and the ABS light functions properly. The stearing did appear to be heavy, but I drive a New Beetle on standard suspension so this might be normal?

Bad bits...slight crack on front spoiler... 2-3 inches of surface rust on passengers sill(this is not deep and can easily be rubbed down and treated...slight mark on door rubbing strip..One OZ kerbed 1/4 of whole wheel...that's it!

Opinions welcome as I think this is a good deal but would like your input

if that's the spec you like, or something you'd like to do to a standard car then do it! Sounds like a nice car, and good to be catching the sills early too ;)

This is the spec of the car Dom...I was looking for one either original in this condition, or modded using good parts...and this one has them...although haven't had a car with Jamex suspension so was wanting to know if the steering would be stiffer due to the lowering and wheels

It is a lovely car though
