I have spent a good two months thinking that I am being stupid or that I have left the wiper switch in some sort of semi automatic, do whatever it wants secret mode! Finally I checked the forums and realised that it was actually a fault. I have booked my baby in to have this looked at but speaking to them on the phone, it seems clear that they have no clue what the problem is... I'll let you know how it goes..............

Noticed recently that the rear wiper is acting up on my 05 GTI.  Much like the posts above it seems to
have mind of its own .It either comes on of its own accord & wont switch off unless I turn off the ignition or wont come on at all.      Did anyone, with this problem, manage to find a solution ??

I think this was/is quite a common problem on earlier GTi's.  The solution was/is a new wiper motor I believe.

Had my rear wiper motor changed under warranty for this fault a couple of months ago.

Yep, the wiper only works now when I operate the stalk!

First time it went in they said there was a fault with the wiper stalk, so replaced that.  The fault returned in a couple of days.  Luckily the second time it went in the service guy had heard of the problem and said to me it would be a motor change.

Thanks . My car is not under warranty so I'd like to get it fixed first go & without the dealers replacing every part aft
of the front bumper !

Correct. New motor needed, under warranty, dealer fix. if only an 05, then oh dear :undecided:

Having the same problem (on an 05 GTI) so out of warranty too....anyone got a rough price of how much a new rear wiper motor would be?
