Help!
« on: 04 June 2006, 18:22 »
I had a Mk2 16v with 56k on the clock which I sold 5 months ago... that car was a peach and a pleasure to drive but circumstances forced a sale at the time... I have now bought another Mk2 16v and this one has 86k on the clock with a FSH and all MOTs to verify the mileage.  The only thing is that I have noticed on first gear if I put my foot down hard that past 4000rpm the car doesn't really seem to go that much faster whereas the previous 16v I had would pull strongly... instead all that happens is a loud boomy noise which seems to be coming from the engine.  This doesn't happen in any other gears and the car seems to be fine in other gears and pulls ok.   Any ideas?  Its not something potentially serious is it?

Have a look at the clutch, sounds like its slippin a tiny bit, try pulling off in 3rd see how much it struggles, if it slipping it won't struggle too much! Might need some adjustment, not sure about valvers clutch, is it cable or hyd? if it hyds you ain't got any adjust. Clutches will last about 70-100k depending on the usage!
Good luck.

Hmm just went out for a blast and tried to hear where the sound was coming from... it sounds like a boomy exhaust that resonates at certain engines revs above 5.5k rpm... will have it checked out.  I am planning to replace the clutch, suspension, cables for the clutch, accelerator and brake, steering rack and anything else that needs doing... I want that 'new car feel' that I had when I had my other low mileage Mk2 16v.  The engine seems fine.
