Topher, I've cut n pasted a quote of yours on 10th April 2006, a while back I know,

You said: - vw upped the boost for the 180bhp's with a slightly stronger map in the ecu. remap alone should see you with about 210bhp, with revo's 4bar specific software (remap)  and a 4bar fpr you can see 235-240 depending on exhaust/cat/filter.

For Owners who may find the VW OE mapping from their current 150  to 180 enough to satisfy them

I have decided, that I do not need to spend money on larger discs, uprated brake calipers, better shock absorbers, and wider alloys to facilitate 210+ bhp. My wife and I will share this one for busy Summer towns and traffic     I like the frugal 108T (kind on pocket yet returns plenty of action)  180 bhp will be enough.

Reasonably soon,  I will have bought my 2001 build AUM engine (48k miles)  up to a 1st class standard.  Best synthetic, new cambelt, new filters and plugs (Bosch platinum) check all hoses, then change a little early.

I would like to acquire the original Golf version of VW's 180bhp ECU map for the AUM..... 150 engine in my Golf mk4.

Where can you buy this modest upgrade ? who will install, and burn my existing map on CD for safety.

Sorry, more questions again from a new boy !  :nerd:   In anticipation, many thanks for your / or any QBE replies

Thank you

I don't know where to suggest you get the +30 bhp upgrade from.

You won't really need bigger brakes or different alloys/suspension, either.

Just get the Revo (it maybe cheaper)..... You don't have to use all of the power, all of the time.  If you drive slowly most of the time, then there will be no extra wear on the engine components or any fuel economy.  Just my opinion, but I can't see the pro's of just going to 180.

Bigger brakes were just more of a show thing on the Anniversary - I don't think the 'normal' 180's got the 312mm brake set-up, 18" rims or lower suspension???!!

I doubt you'll get your hands on the OE code. A custom mapper might have a clone of it that they can flash to your car.. but they'll probably charge you the same as a remap.. and the same again if you ever want it back to stock settings so you might aswell just get a straight custom map.. and ask them to make it quite mild.

200bhp really isnt a problem for the standard brakes/suspension/intercooler/clutch. If you go for revo you can get a switch to flick between stock and performance modes whenever you feel like it.

Thank you Ivor and Topher,

I will investigate the Revo remap when I've got the car up to spec. I was pleased to hear that standard equipment can handle the extra power. The switching is to stock mode is a great feature.

Re- Mk4 1.8T

I have also, to dump the P6000 Tyres in the next 6 months or so as well. Odd these tyres ? on the rear set, there is cracking around the upper side wall on the circumference where the tread a pattern begins. Almost reminds me of the way remolds were manufactured 30 years ago !  Are P6000 prone to this sort of degradation ?

For higher profile tyres  45/50/55 , I've generally favoured Contisport Contacts, but my mates at Bracknell tyres recommend Goodyear F1's for the 205/55/16" Montreal 2 rims.  Your comments on the F1's please gentlemen, would also be appreciated.

Most appreciative of your quick replies.

Kind regards to you guys.

P6000 are Ditchfinders, IMO!!!

You have been advised well..... I bought 6 F1's in a row, but my last 2 have been Bridgestone RE720's.  They both grip very well in the wet & dry, can't fault either in that dept..  I would say that the F1's are of a slightly softer compound, & have a slightly softer, more rounded sidewall.  They're also a bit noisier than the RE720's.  They're about the same price - Both are excellent tyres, though.

Look on >>> www.mytyres.co.uk

ps I stuck with 205 55 16's on my Monty 2's.  I was toying with idea of going down to 50 profiles, but they're more expensive & I reckon they would've make the gap underneath the arches look to big???

Thanks Ivor,

I thought those Pir' P6000 were wellingtons !

I just might get those Bridgestone RE720's, I don't want an over rounded side wall on a high profile tyre. One gets roll with high profile, so to reduce roll, one needs a firm sidewall. What pressure for these, I prefer 2.3 bar 34lbs plus, do these wear well at the edges, I've thrown Conti's away on the BM for the same reason, only rear sets of course.

The 50's were going to be the same money as 55's for the F1's .  I did enquire about putting on 215's as well. Not recommended ! As for wheel arches, the thought had crossed my mind as well, that was my conclusion.

Plugs, the 1.8 turbo likes the single grounding stump with the platinum electrode type plugs the best, I'm told ??. I therefore bought Bosch Platin type FR 7 DPP33 . Do these meet with your requirements ?

Thanks for the qualified advice, cheers

Duncan

You can get away with 215's, but I reckon the sidewalls flex too much under extreme cornering. (I tried  205 tyres on a 6J wheel on my old Pug, & subsequently threw them out) - 205's are best on the 61/2J of a Monty 2.

VW state (on the inside of the fuel cap) 2.1 BAR for the front; 1.9 BAR for the rears - Perhaps an over-inflation of 2.3 BAR will wear the centre of your tyres out??!!

Don't know exactly what they are, but OE plugs are good enough for me!

!   What are the OE ones ? went to the Dealer asked for platinum, he said £12.45 each less 5% - so declined the offer. These VAG people in Berkshire are so dry in the Parts department. Very Germanic in their approach to service, you pay our price or we aren't bothered.

Yep I agree,  I'm still in BM mode on tyre pressures, I must think Golf. I don't have the sticker on the petrol flap, must have come off.

Yes of course, no weight in the back, therefore soft tyres to stop bounce. Your Bridgestones ok that soft ?  i.e. 28lbs on the stern axle.

Cheers Ivor,

Duncan
