Ignition switch removal

Hi,

Has anyone tried replacing an ignition switch? Its an 1989 8V.

I've removed the shroud on the steering column but can't see anything holding the connector in. Do I need to start removing the steering wheel and working my way down from the top? Also, is it necessary to drill out and remove the ignition barrel? 

Any advice before I start dismantling is much appreciated.

The old haynes manual tells you all about this one mate.
It shows removing the connector and where to drill to remove the steering lock and how to dissmantle the steering colum.
It is very easy but its just difficult to exsplain with out pictures.

Remove the steering wheel, stalks and shroud trim, then undo the ignition housing bolt & remove the nut & bolt holding the column to the universal joint at the bottom.  Then the ignition housing will come out complete with the inner column, after that a small screw holds the ignition switch in place.

I*f you want to remove the lock you have to drill in a specific location, the haynes manual gives the exact dimentions.

Thanks for the advice Jimbo and Rubjonny.

In the end, I never removed the ignition switch. My car was dying on me randomly with no warning lights and on closer inspection, I noticed that somebody had previously replaced one of the pins on the connector to the ignition switch. Probably the company who installed the alarm.  :angry: Why he didn't just splice into the wire I don't know.

Anyway, the replacement pin was a bit too wide so it did not penetrate very deep into the connector giving rise to a rather tenuous contact. When I tried wobbling the wire with the engine on, it just cut out with no lights. I'm hoping I've found my fault but time will tell.   :undecided:
