cool it ??
« on: 18 April 2006, 20:32 »
:undecided:I was wondering about this for a while - when i start off and the engine is cool, it runs (seems) very well. After a few miles and the engine gets nice and hot - oil temp around 90 - 92 C, everything seems to change - response, smoothness, sound...all seems to get worse. Usually, when I pull in somewhere and the engine cools a little - i start the engine and off it goes..great...until it starts to heat up again..annoying.
i recently cleaned out the throttle body, cleaned out oil breather hoses, changed oil, plugs etc..also timing belt, tensioner and timing checked so should be fine.
The oil filter is a cheap one though - coopers - this is slightly larger and white in colour - unlike the standard VW filter which is smaller and black. It was suggested to me that maybe the oil is getting too hot (it has gone up as high as 94 C) and the cooper filter may not be helping. Sure enough the bloke with the VW filter reports oil temp normally 78 - 86 C).
Could it be the filter r even the oil breather?
 anyone experience this??

Could be the filter, your oil is certainly getting too hot.

Oil temp of 94 isn't too high, i would look else where for the problem.

well - I replaced the coopers oil filter with a VW one and checked the oil breather (also the small twin rubber pipes from the breaher box) - no change in oil temperature though - still 91 - 94.
What the hell is wrong with my car...??......it gets loud when it heats up..maybe its just the exhaust or even the CAT ??...is there any such thing as a CAT cleaner/maintenance fluid ??

if you read the golf manual it says only worry about the oil if it gets to 150 or something nutty like that!

this is not a problem ( the temp), any problems lie elsewhere I think
mine runs as high as 98 at times, but with no lack of performance what so ever

Am using Castrol gtx magnetec 15w40 also - I think this type of oil is ok. From reading comments from others, the oil temp seems to be spot on also. I now suspect the exhaust / CAT system. But why should the problem occur when everything is at operating temperature ??

Try changing the 4 pin sensor in the plastic flange on the front of the block
