80Sport 1.8T engine swap issues?
« on: 18 April 2006, 00:13 »
hi everyone, hope your well.

things have been hectiv here, no audi action at all just work work oh well be graduated soon then i can get a job to do my cars. (BOTh out of MOT now!)

been having some thought though.  The Quattro is going to get an MOT after a cambelt change (which is a complete arse to do) and a possible fuel line re-pipe and bit of de-scaling.

the 80Sport however is pretty shagged, rot wise.  but its not the shell i'm here to question you about.  as its going to be off the road, its gonna get a going through.
so im toying with the idea of a 1.8T and i wondered what this involves - how many of you have done this before?  I thought this might be slightly more feasible as the engine in there right now is a 1781cc 8valve lump. - am i right?

1) What gearbox can i mate this too?
2) i also need to fit it longitudinally - were they fitted longitudinally in passats? Golf TT A3 is transverse i think.

I have many more questions but i'll ask later on - look forward to all your replys!!

i guess the easiest way would be to get a 1.8t out of another audi because it will be a longitudinally one anyway, so you can take the gearbox with it....

yep fair play.  i was wondering what would fit because the Sport box at the moment is damn quick through the gears and a mean accelerator.  There are some other similar boxes (Coupe GT) that give same ratios on first 3, then longer 4th and 5th for that top end that would be nice to use.  Keeping the original box (or a similar box) would be best for packaging I'd imagine.

However yep using the same gearbox the 1.8T comes with will ensure that it's something that can handle 150/180+ bhp.  - any idea what a standard Sport box will take? (or a Golf Mk2 8V box - similar age just different way around should be a ballpark figure)

pretty sure an A3 is transverse, and the TT too.

so is an A4 is the same as a Passat - longitutinal?

cheers

yeah pretty sure. the golf, leon, beetle, a3 all have the same floorpan so and are all transverse along with the tt. the passat/a4 have the longitudinal mounted engines.

80 Sports rock!!  I had a mint 86 (C registered) in red about 8 years ago. From what I remember it seemed as fast as my turbo's standard 150bhp!......bloody heavy steering when you're trying to park though. :nerd:

nice one! yep they rock, unfortunatly mine has succumbed to the rot worm for now.
they do seeem quick, 100-odd bhp, think they weigh 980kg - maybe slightly more.

but its all in the box really - 3rd is good, and if you do happen to pushing it, when you slot into 4th its right on the torque curve again.   not a lot of difference between 4th and 5th either - so its at the cost of top end.  dont really care though as im a B-road driver anyway!

glad you enjoyed it - what happened to the Sport?
