16v Modifications
« on: 13 April 2006, 01:17 »
Hi, I own a GTI 16v, looking into getting a Mk3 2.0 16v bottom block and head (port and polished 2.0 head because of better flow than 1.8 port and polished head), but will I need Mk3 2.0 16v camshafts (Kent Cams as I'm looking to get these anyway)? Also, whilst on the subject, has anybody any experience with the pipercross induction kit for the 16v, or do you recommend a K&N replacement filter instead. Many thanks.

i'm only just getting into the whole 16v thing so i might be way off here. but i think going to a mk3 2ltr block doesn't make much sense as its a taller block so you'll have to do a few other things to get it all working. a 9a engine out of a corrado or passat is 2ltr but still a short block like your current kr. as far as i kno there isn't alot of difference in heads so a decent port and polish should be cool on your own head. if you use a complete 9a engine you're better off using the kr inlet cam as it has a more agressive profile than the 9a. but if you're planning on using kent/piper cams anyway it doesn't really matter, buy them for the engine you choose.
as for the induction kit, apparently they're not worth the money, your better off with the panel filter in the air box.

hope some of that is usefull and is actually correct! like i say i'm just learnign about 16v's!
team grumpy....... its a way of life, not a forum post

Thanks, so if I used the 2.0L bottom end, which head do people recommend (ported and polished). If I went with the 1.8 head, which cams are recommended, or the 2.0 head, which cams recommended? Many Thanks

hey not butting in
just read ing your your chat but as far as im aware the 2.0l 16v head had less wild cams in fact quite soft compared to the 8v but still used the old 8v bottom end to push out the 150 bhp now if you want to push out more horses with a flowed head are you going for some oversized valves and to time these cams perfect you will have to do away with the original pulleys dont want to sound necky but verniers are just the ticket as just sticking wild cams not timed to perfection is madness as waste of all that lift and some soild lifters some people say that 8 valves have more tourqe and 16v more revsi just dont know myself
and my point is i think im just rambling
but dont waste your time with induction unless you have a full free flow exhaust (manifold down and through)

the 16 valve has more torque but its further up the rev band. as for cams im keeping the original exhaust cam but changing the inlet cam to something more suited to a ported headdont know what yet. i was going to go bigger valves but from what im planning should see 160-170 bhp as a conservative guess from original valves just get them reseated. to get the head work your lookin at around 500-1000 quid and thats just for the following and these are the steps i recommend anyone to take
1, get it pressure checked to see if the heads cracked if not then
2, if necesarry skim the head
3, get it ported and polished
4, new valves seals
i was told if i wanted bigger valves its gonna cost big bucks so if anyone knows any good companies that are cheap and good pm me
just read ich1 post properly im using the original 1.8kr head
