stereo wiring help!

I am trying to sort a bodge from the previous owner of my 89 plate 8 valve, I was just which is the memory wire for the stereo? is it the yellow and white wire? and what is the blue and grey wire for on the original loom? cheers

Memory will be the blue or blue and gray, the yellow and white is most likely telophone mute or something along those lines

i think its yellow for memory and blue for telephone. Cant remember as its been a while

Blue and grey on the car loom is memory i'm 99% sure, and i thought most stereos used blue for memory and yellow for phone, tho i have been wrong before (and had the shocks to show for it!!!)

I'm sure the blue/grey (which I'm sure is infact Grey with a Blue tracer) is the dash illumination 0.5 mm .
The earth and live feed/s should be 2.5mm.

cheers lads i don't know its gone then whoever had it had a lamp tester wired up to the loom??? mmm strange and all the wires have been messed with, il sort tomorrow, thanks again

Whip out the multimeter and start testing, always the best way to go!!

The yellow/white wire is for speed sensitive volume control I think, and blue/grey is DEFINITELY the dash illumination wire.

By 'memory' do you mean permanaent live?  If so it will be the red one
If you want ignition live you'll have to run one from the fusebox, or from the fan switch.  If its an early MK2 this is dead easy as on the rear of the fusebox you have 2 groups of spare spade terminals, ons side live, the other ignition live.

If its a late MK2 think about wiring up the 'key in ignition' feed, its there but hardly ever used.  The correct wire is labled up as 'S' I believe, or perhaps 'SU'.  The way I did it was to chop a plug off a scrappy car, and remove one of the wires.  I then fitted one of the wires to the empty slots in the MK2 plug & used trial & error with a multimeter till I found the key in ignition feed, then ran it to the radio using a fuse.

cheers mate appreciate that, all sorted now i used a permanent live which i found hacked off lurking in the back of the hole then wired that up works fine now,
