why wont the engine start when warm?
« on: 31 March 2006, 19:34 »
my 1600 driver takes an ages to start when its warm. it turns over and over and eventually starts, but it aint going to make a get away car thats for sure.

the engine is totally standard and has a refurbished 2e2 carb on it. i changed the rotor arm, cap, plugs and coolant o ring too.

any ideas?

Two possible causes: loss of compression when its got hot - what's the mileage and is it burning oil? Second, fuel vapourising in the carb. My Driver (Weber) will usually catch straight off when hot but if you touch the throttle or it doesn't catch you have to put your foot right down and turn it over for an age and then it stinks of fuel for a mile or two. As VW motors are pretty hardy so I'd guess the second one, just something we have to live with with a carb. If it is really bad get it on a gas analyser and see if it's under or over fueling when hot but my guess is it's under fuelling.

P.S. Carefully study of old episodes of the Sweeney show the slags keep the motor running so your blag with Mo, Strangely Brown and Larry the Wallet is on

It could be that the fuel reservior thingy on the front of the engine is not working properly. Its supposed to hold a bit of pressure when you turn off the engine to give instant feed to the carb. It also keeps the fuel re-circulating when its running to keep it cool, if it stops working properly, when the engine is hot it can vapourise the fuel and make it difficult to start. Could also be that the flap in the air intake is stuck on winter setting so always taking hot air from the exhaust manifold, again, hot air when not required does not help starting.

Cheers Jeeza I'll might try changing mine to see if it helps. Neil when it's hot I don't go anywhere near the pedal. I can't figure out what it's doing as it seems to be over and under fuelling at the same time. :undecided: It seems most tempramental when its been stood for more than 15mins or so - but it never fails to start. I haven't had a carbed car for 12 years and its just taking a bit of getting used to.
