Driveshaft spline tool
« on: 28 March 2006, 22:28 »
Hi guys

Some of you may have seen the problems I've been having with my gearbox here http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=35806.0

Well, managed to get the gearbox and clutch out on saturday, and turns out what I thought was the oil filler nut was in fact just a bolt that someone had put in to fill an enormous hole in the gearbox casing! I'm assuming a diff rivet has come lose and done this at some point in the past, so I'm glad I bought a new box now rather than just trying to replace the seal! This does bring about a new problem tho......does anyone know where the filler nut actually is, and how I can check the oil level?

A couple of the driveshaft bolts were knackered too and had to be ground off, but we didn't have the spline tool for the rest anyway so had to use an allen key bashed in pretty hard to remove them. Got 12 new bolts now, but obviously I don't wanna put them back like that, but I don't have the correct spline tool either, so can anyone help??

Went to halfrauds but they only sold it as part of a 37 piece set for £30! Just wondering if anyone had one they might be kind enough to lend me for saturday? I live in dunstable, but we're doing the car in the southgate area of north london, so if anyone around those areas is feeling generous.......

Failing that, anyone know where I can get one for a reasonable price? I think it's called a M8 spline tool.

cheers

GSF do one for £13 quid ish i think, fits onto a socket and is very long which comes in handy as you can do the bolts through the wheel arch.  Your welcome to borow mine, if you live anywhere near Guildford, Surrey....

The filler is an allen bolt plug on the outer 'end' of the gearbox. You need to refill it when it is back on the car on a level surface and not jacked up too high. You fill it through this hole until it spills back out. Some prefer to fill the box through the speedo connection hole, again until it pours out of the end filler hole. If the new box is empty it will take 2 litres of oil. I'm sure someone will be able to assist with the spline tool.

the filler/drain plugs take a allen head tool, 19mm IIRC. The drain plug is on the bottom and the filler/level plug on the passener side.  Once the box is out/you get the new one it will become obvious :)

Its much easier to fill it thru the speedo cable hole untill oil comes out the filler/level hole on the side as said. Be very careful when removing/fitting the speedo cable though as the gear can drop off the end into the box which can put a downer on your day

Thanks dude, I appreciate the offer, but you're a bit too far away I'm afraid....now if anyone who lives between around junct 9 of the M1 (where I live) and barnet/southgate (where the car is) is feeling as generous...

Jonny - I remembered you said to be careful when removing the speedo cable, but I couldn't quite recall what you'd said might drop off, so I just told my mate to watch out while we were doing it.......to be perfectly honest I have no idea about this kind of stuff, so I'd have no idea if the gear had dropped off or not! Can you put it in laymans terms for me?

well when you take the cable out, there should be a red or white plastic gear on the end.  Make sure it dont fall off ;)

Very similar to this:

Be really careful with this  :nerd: so monkey mechanic dropped mine in and i ended up having the gearbox rebuilt as it all had to be taken apart to get it out - the car was stuck in reverse  - thats the last time i've ever trusted anyone else with my car

this is what you want for your driveshafts, i want one too i hate getting under the car

tool in the Ebay listing is exactly what I got from GSF a few weeks ago, and it was cheaper too.  Very handy indeed!

How much was it from GSF - It'll need to be quite a bit cheaper for it to be worth me going to brixton for  :undecided: Its too close to pay for postage but just far away enough to mean saturday morning wasted
