Front/rear wipers and fan not working
« on: 26 March 2006, 16:51 »
Hi

I've just been out in the car to find the the front/rear wipers would not work, then after sometime of the engine being off they worked again,I've also just noticed that the fan is not blowing either. Are they connected some how? Not sure what to do? can someone please help.

Cheers

Lee

P.S I've got a MK2 1990 GTI 16v

Sounds like the front scuttle is filling with water. Take the long plastic cover off (carefully because its very flimsy) and clean the scuttle out, there are drain holes at each end, it only takes a couple of dead leaves and they're blocked (a squirrels hoard of nuts in my case). The scuttle fills and water leaks into the fan motor&rheostat and chuffs it. The fan and wipers are not on the same fuse circuit but there is wiring to the wipers under there which may have shorted with water temporariliy.

Well just been out to check scuttle cover and it's all clear.
Started the car and wipers and fan run fine for about a minute then all went off. Running out of ideas please help.

Cheers

Try wiggling the key in the ignition - switch sometimes goes

perhaps the x over relay is loose, its the small metal one #18 I think?  Switch the wipers on and wiggle it :)
