Linkage alignment tool

Hi guys,

Great site you have here!

Came across the linkage repair guide a few weeks back, bought the bits and set about doing it today...

All went very smoothly until I had to realign the linkage! I dont have the tool required and finding it incredibly difficult to do by trial and error!

The guide says Dave2227 sells the tool needed but I'm unsure who this Dave chap is?! I'm in pretty urgent need of this tool, anyone on here have one I could borrow that they could send me for a few beer tokens?

you can do it with out but it is much easier with the tool. you should be able to line it up by using the clean/dirty marks as a guide then get the gearstick in the neutral position and then the linkages should all be vertical and horizontal at sort of right angles to each other if you know what i mean. that should get it almost where it should be then i bit of tweaking here and there should have it smooth!

The easiest way of doing it without an alignment tool is to put the box in reverse gear before disassembly,  then when refitting get a M8 to sit in the car and put the lever in the reverse position while you tighten up the clamp,  done this last week with no prob's

Without it, trial & error is the only way.  Easiest way is to hold it 10mm away from the reverse lock out gate, and refitr the clamp rought the same position along the shaft as it was before. Tighten, try your gears, adjust, tighten etc till it's just right

Get an old cassette box (check the antiques on ebay if you havent got one ) shove it into the gap and you're sorted

glad somebody has mentioned this i am having trouble getting first, i can either get first or fifth, im bidding on this tool now.

  i use one of the slim boxes on my mk1, maybe mk2's are a bit different

  actually i think it's 14mm for the mk1 - its friday forgive me

Yeah the MK1 is different, I'll have to dig out some boxes for when we refit the linkage on the cabby
