have you seen: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=3072.0
or try lookin on www.vr6.oc.com there loads on there

Fuel wise i get 25mpg out of this vr (97 highline)and got 22 out of my last (was older one). Doesnt help i onli do very local miles. iv seen 36mpg on the maf at times on long trips tho. It is a thirsty car.
Ho wever the power is supurb, it took me a while to get use to as i had a 1.4 before! and was used to flooring it all the time. You find the vr6 drives it self with all that power very comfortable! can be over powering at times and around corners if you dont know what your doing.
mk3s can have a boaty like suspension but you will find that in a gti or vr6, just need some upgraded shocks ect.

mine has been AMD rechipped and returns about 30 mpg (its very easy to drop it below 20 though if your having fun )
the handling on the original shocks is bound to be a bit iffy (remember the vr6 wasnt a sports car but a topend motor to compete in the bmw  market!) but a set of coilovers transforms it into a car capable of keeping with most ,
just buy one you will not regret it they have got to be the best value golf you can get  ,
