I have a 2.0 16v 6a from an Audi 80 in my '89 16v, using an 8v gearbox with an 8v friction plate and the original 16v flywheel/pressure plate..

After ragging it round for a few months i would say the gearbox is the weak link as mine is now whining like a trooper- wish i'd gone for a cable-change box froma Passat- these are stronger than the mk2 boxes. You need the pedal box though but if you are paying someone to do the swap i reckon its worth the extra hassle/cost.

You dont need to change the pedal box. You can buy an adapter that converts the clutch from hydraulic to manual. Easy peasy. You will however need to change the shifter box, but thats easy done too. Also they may be stronger but not by much. I still managed to break the diff rivets and create a rather large hole in the bell housing taking with it the clutch, flywheel and box.

depending on which 8v box you get the ratios are the same as the 16v I know both the 86-87 8v boxs I have are the same ratios  other than 5th and according to http://www.scirocco.org/gears/ there should be a minor top speed increase on the 8v box

 :undecided: i had a stock 1600gti on a jetta box which did 140mph @ 5000rpm - explain?

the mk2's do have the same box for the 8v & 16v - the extra speed comes from the extra rev's of the 16v - thats why they've got 160mph on the clock rather than 140mph :nerd:

Ooops, i really shouldn't post when i'm stoned - that should have been 5500rpm

dunno what happened to my reply lastnight  can't be bothered to type it again so:-

Toofunky house - go for it, ignore these people they dont know what they're talking about - i've done it so i know  :smug:

16v banger - fix that banger

mk2litre16v - he's on a budget so is cable change really worth it  :undecided:

Whoa that pony guys, I guess we all speak from experience eh? Only trying to help!

Am gonna look into the cable change conversion myself but yeh maybe not if you are on a budget!

Mk2GTI2.016v- i was told swapping pedal boxes saved having to convert anything, but if it makes the job easier- now thats my kind of option

 Im not pissed mate, just get annoyed when people try and contradict something i know to be fact!!!

I probably misread the cable change bit and i didn't realise there was 2x  2litre 16v's posting  :embarassed: but as hes on a budget thats probably not worth looking into

:nerd: so Toofunkyhouse - back to your question

your mk1 box will fit the 16v lump if you use the mk1 flywheel

a mk2 box will give you better top end compared to the mk1 box - either 8v or 16v (lets just leave the debate over which is quicker of these 2 open)

:smug: for the record my mates mk2 8v went off the clock regularly, weve had his 16v to about 150mph but he's too pussy to push it that bit further - i've got no doubt it would go all the way

my mk1 with the jetta box didn't have a speedo (It snapped 6 cables so i gave up replacing them) - 5000rpm was about 130mph, i had plenty of people trying to keep up with me confirm this over the 4 years i had the car  :nerd:

I've never known a gti to have an optimistic speedo  - if it doesn't reach the top of the redline in top it needs fixing  :smug:

well where are all the other valver owners at then doing 150 not
so whats a vr6 supposed to do 200mph
now I know that gear calculator says them silly speeds like 150 for a valver and I agree the wheels can do that when the car is on axle stands just  but the mk2 is hardly aerodynamic is it if it is so is my house and our 72 type 2 camper
